So much more than scrap metal

How the death of a washing machine changed it all - The Shane Boyd Metal Art Studios Story

In 2024, Shane Boyd had been saving up to buy a machine so he could start a small business sharpening knives. He’s always been a believer in saving to buy the things he needed and just when he’d got the money together, the washing machine died costing almost exactly what he had saved!

Being back at square one, Shane started thinking of ways he could raise the money he needed faster and a video he had watched on youtube where a guy made a turtle out of scrap metal items came to mind.

He started tinkering in the shed and selling some of the small items he made and soon discovered it wasn’t knife sharpening he wanted to do but metal art!

Metal sculpture of a person's bust, made from nuts, bolts, chains, and gears; gray and silver.

A TV show that led to a unique niche

Whilst Shane has and continues to create pieces of all different forms, it was the TV show “Vikings” that inspired him to create his first human form pieces. It was in the process of designing and constructing these showstopping Viking women that he discovered his niche.

Originally, he had thought that the pieces would mostly appeal to men as statement pieces in mancaves and sheds but what he didn’t anticipate was that women from all walks of life would fall in love with them.

The women who have commissioned his “warrior women” pieces all say that they see themselves in the art and it reminds them of how strong they can be!

Meet Shane Boyd

Shane Boyd lives in the beautiful rainforest town of Evelyn in Far North Queensland with his beautiful partner, Kerry. He is a humble man that takes immense satisfaction in seeing others enjoy his work.

Interestingly, his father was a professional welder, and Shane had no interest in welding until later in life when he discovered metal art.

His favourite part about the metal art he creates is that no two pieces are the same and each brings its own unique challenges. He gathers inspiration from other artists and is always seeking to improve and evolve his craft.

He enjoys working part time at the local fuel station in Ravenshoe and is grateful that it has brought him out of his shell and given him the opportunity to meet new people and make connections with the community.
